Semmelweis University

The University was founded in 1635.

2012 is the 243rd academic year at the Faculty of Medicine. In 1955, Faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy were incorporated into the University.

In 1969, the name of the University was changed to Semmelweis University of Medicine. The new name honors Ignác Semmelweis who discovered the cause of puerperal fever and was a professor and a chairman on the Faculty of Medicine.

Today, Semmelweis University incorporates the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physical Education and Sport Sciences, and the Faculty of Health Sciences. Semmelweis University was the first Hungarian higher educational institution that started to offer an international program.

Current enrollment at the Faculty of Medicine is 3200 students, at the Faculty of Dentistry 630, and at the Faculty of Pharmacy 649.

University of Szeged

The University of Szeged is proud to be listed as one of the Top Universities according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities in nine consecutive years (2003-2011).

The University was founded in 1581. After 1940 the first rector of the medical institute was Albert Szent-Györgyi, who received the most prestigious award of sciences in 1937, the Nobel Prize, for his research conducted at the University. He was the first to isolate vitamin C, extracted from paprika.

The Englsih Language Program for foreign students was established in 1985. In 1987 the university was renamed after its former Biochemistry Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Rector and Nobel Laureate, Albert Szent-Györgyi.

In the academic year 2011/12 there are around 850 international students at the Faculty of Medicine (English and German program), 111 at the Faculty of Dentistry, 76 at the Faculty of Pharmacy and 114 in the Preparatory courses.

University of Pecs Medical School

The historic city of Pécs is proud to house the country’s oldest University, which was founded in 1367 by King Louis the Great. The University of Pécs is a state University. The medical school is listed in the WHO’s directory of Medical Schools and is accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board. The International Program started in 1984. Our students come from 39 countries all over the world.

In the academic year 2010/11 165 general medicine, 54 dentistry and 28 pharmacy students were admitted to the medical school.

Szent Istvan University

Faculty of Veterinary Science - one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world. This European-standard faculty still operates on small scale and it enrolls only a limited number of students each year keeping a familiar atmosphere in the historical campus located in the middle of Budapest. In fact, the Chair of Animal Healing at the Faculty of Medicine was established in 1787 shortly after the foundation of the first veterinary school in the world (in Lyon in 1762). As an independent institution the school earned an international reputation in the first half of the 20th century.

In the 1990's a Field Station and a Large Animal's Clinic was built outside Budapest providing a bigger supply of horses and cattle for the students in the clinical years. In 2000 the veterinary school became an integrated part of the Szent István University. Since the foundation of the international programs in 1989 around 2000 international students were enrolled.

The conclusion of the 1995 accreditation report by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education reported that the University of Veterinary Science can claim a proud position among its European counterparts. Its young graduates need not be afraid of competing with their European colleagues for their knowledge and practical skills.

Salient Features:

University of Debrecen

The history of higher education in Debrecen goes back to the 16th century. The city established the Calvinist College of Debrecen in 1538. The College became soon the most important cultural center of the whole country, where a great number of writers, scientists and politicians received their education.

In the 18th century the schools of Law and Theology were founded and although no separate School of Medicine existed, physicians were also trained in the College. Today's University Medical School is rooted in this spiritual heritage. The present day Debrecen is also famous for its schools and higher educational establishments. The Medical School of the University of Debrecen is Central Europe's first campus medical school. It was in the year of the millennium (1896) of Hungary's foundation when the establishment of a modern University was decided upon in Debrecen. The University was officially inaugurated on October 23, 1918 and at that time consisted of four faculties: Arts, Science, Theology and Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine became an independent University Medical School under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in 1951.

The Medical School has 22 departments of basic sciences and 25 clinical departments specializing in various fields.

Charles University

Since the early 20 century began to develop what was then the outskirts of Prague's Vinohrady health care campus. In 1902, in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Management and Administration University of Management and Administration in Zamosc is a non-state institution operating under the Act on Schools of Higher Education. It was founded on 13th August 1997 and is registered in the Ministry of National Education and Sport’s Register of Non-State Schools, entry number 127.
